Module 2 - The Diagnosis and Analysis of Conflict

Dr. Erik Melander, Associate Professor at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University in Sweden began the week by introducing the methodology of Conflict Mapping.

This module moves more in depth into the assessment, analysis, and understanding of conflicts.  Conflicts can be difficult to assess and comprehend, and this module will provide a background for classifying and categorizing conflict.

  Northern Thailand Field Study: 7 - 15 February 2008

Northern Thailand Field Study was held on 7 – 15 February 2008. They went to Chiang Mai, Mae Sariang, and Mae Sot. They learned about natural resources conflict management and the refugee situation in Thailand.


Participants traveled by boat along the Salween River to Tha Ta Fang Village. The weather was very cold and foggy.

Participants interviewed villagers in Tha Ta Fang village about the effects of the Dam Project in Salween River. They spent a whole day at village to know their living style and culture.

Meetings with NGOs in Mae Sot, Participants learned about the status of refugees in Mae Sot from UNHCR and other NGOs working in refugee camps. They also went to AAPP and listened to the Burmese situation from last year.

On the visit to Mae La Camp on February 13, 2008, they met with Camp Committee and discussed about the role of Camp Committee and Camp Based Organizations. After the meeting in the morning, participants visited the organizations in Mae La camp and talked some refugees


Module 3 Week 1 : Negotiations & Mediation, Cross Cultural Conflict Resolution

Cross Cultural Conflict resolution is one session which is very important for our world where there are many culture conflicts between countries and communities

  Module 3 Week 2 : Problem Solving by Communication Skills

Dr. Panrapee Suttiwan, taught about team building. She asked participants to build peace from straws, foil, and tape. Participants separated into two groups to build peace with the materials. Dr. Puntip Sirivunnabood, talked about how to use communication skills to solve problems.

Looking at conflict from a variety of different perspectives: psychological, interpersonal, civic, and political, this module will give the participants a comprehensive understanding of the approaches and strategies required for successful conflict resolution
